11 Things You Should Avoid Buying at the Dollar Store

dollar storeBeing a frugal person, you know to take advantage of certain deals to save the most money. You also probably have a list of stores that you visit on a regular basis and you know where to go for certain things. Going to the dollar store is an excellent place to find deals on certain things, but it’s easy to get caught up in all of the amazing deals at the dollar store, because frugal people absolutely love to save the most amount of money possible. Unfortunately, you can’t think like this. When at the dollar store, you should know what to buy and what to avoid, because some things are just so bad quality that it’s not even worth it. Today, I’m going to give you a list of things you should never buy at the dollar store.

#1. Anything Electrical

Are you thinking about getting a new toaster, blender or any other sort of electrical appliance? Want to score one on the cheap at the dollar store?  I highly suggest you think twice about it. The quality will be horrible and it won’t last long. It’s just cheaper to fork out the extra few dollars at another store.

#2. Aluminum Foil

The aluminum foil at dollar stores is absolutely horrible. I’d never suggest buying it.

#3. Plastic Wrap

The plastic wrap at the dollar store is very cheap and will either end up tearing or will end up getting stuck together. In other words, it’s a mess just waiting to happen.

#4. Kitchen Utensils

Kitchen utensils aren’t too expensive to begin with, so I’d highly suggest buying them elsewhere. The ones at the dollar store are horrible quality. There’s nothing worse than the smell of a melting spatula or having a peeling knife snap on you while trying to peel a potato.

 #5. Kid’s Toys

The toys at the dollar store are very cheap and will end up breaking. Even worse than that, they could be hazardous to your children, especially after something breaks into small pieces.

#6. Medicine

It’s not a good idea to get any sort of medicine at the dollar store, because they could have already expired by the time they’ve been sent to the dollar store. It’s not safe to take expired medications.

#7. Oven Mitts

If you don’t want to burn your hand when you grab something in the oven, should avoid the ones at the dollar store.

#8 Pot Holders

Just like oven mitts, you should avoid pot holders, as well. It’s not a good feeling when these things melt and you end up burning your hands.

#9. Soda

Soda isn’t really that much cheaper at the dollar store, if it’s any cheaper at all. Typically, you can find a 2-liter of a generic brand soda for a $1 at the dollar store, but you can find a 2-liter bottle of name brand soda for $1 at Walmart.

#10. Chewing or Bubble Gum

Just like with soda, chewing and/or bubble gum isn’t really any cheaper at the dollar store.

#11. Tools

How much use do you really think you’re going to get out of a hammer that you found for $1 at the dollar store? Let me tell you, you won’t get much out of it and it’s dangerous. I would suggest finding one elsewhere.
