I just read this article in The Wall Street Journal about Hershey’s increasing their wholesale prices almost 10%. You know what my first thought was? It doesn’t impact me!
Since I have started using coupons and shopping at Walgreens or CVS I have learned that there is no need to pay for gum, candy or chocolate. I already told you how to get some free Hershey’s bliss at Walgreens this month. There seems to be a candy deal at CVS almost every week. Or you can just wait for a good post-holiday clearance to get some cheap chocolate.
So Hershey’s I feel your pain as a manufacturer, but because I am a better shopper than I was a year ago, your price increase doesn’t affect me.

Isn’t it awesome becoming a better shopper? A year ago I would have been so happy to walk out of a store saving 30%. Now if it dips below 69-70% I am disappointed!
Do you think they might have less sales though? I know that I was at the grocery on Sunday and they have an everyday meat deal that is 5 for $19.95. Occassionally they do a sale for 5 for $15.95 of buy 5 get the 6 free. Well, a lot of the cuts that you used to be able to buy in that program have been discontinued from the program. I can no longer get cube steaks or popcorn shrimp as part of the deal, for example.
I use the candy bars as filler frequently. They will become a more expensive filler. Bags of Gold Emblem at CVS will get close to being cheaper.
I’m not very old, but I remember when the regular price of a candy bar was 19 cents. I would go shopping with my neighbor (not sure why) and she would buy a candy bar for us to share on the ride home.
Actually I think they will have more sales because they have to promote their product more aggressively now that it has gone up in price compared to the competition.
