Should I hand them the manufacturer’s coupon first or the Walgreens?
I always hand the manufacture’s coupons first cause if not when they scan the Walgreens coupon before the manufactures coupon it always beeps and says something like item not found (according to the cashier). So that’s the best way for me and it has worked everytime.
What has been frustrating lately is that some of the Walgreen’s coupons are ringing up as manufacturer coupons – even though the word “manufacturer” does not appear anywhere on the coupon. For example, the sheets of $200 coupons that came out last week will appear on the receipt as a manufacturer coupon, as well as the Triaminic coupons from the Healthy Savings booklet.
You are still able to use a “traditional” manufacturer coupon along with the Walgreen’s “manufacturer” coupon, but this does complicate figuring the coupon to item ratio. I have been caught a couple of times with not having the appropriate filler items since I didn’t figure the Walgreen’s coupon into my ratio.
I agree with heather. I dont step foot in that place. Ived tried a few times to get the deals that mercedes outlines here and only get hassled. I skip them and dont read the ad because it upsets me that i cant get the deals!
now the wlagreens coupons you guys are talking about from the booklets…do they say manufacturer on them? My manager said i couldnt use them because they said manufacurer coupon. This was the lubriderm deal from the diabetes booklet.
Your husband must be one of the few that know what knows what he is doing. Most of the time rules are made up along the way and as in the case of a .99 sale item and you hand them a $1.00 coupon, they scan it and when it beeps hand you it back and say nothing. They have no idea that adjusting even exists!
I’ll need to keep a copy of this handy since, for clearance items that are less than the coupons, the clerks ALWAYS refuse to take the coupon. Very frustrating. Thanks for the heads up!
Doesn’t it seem “fraudulent” for Walgreens to adjust the cost of the item if the coupon amount is for more than the cost of the item? They are reimbursed the full amount of the coupon plus handling. Why do they say it’s wrong for us to get “cash back” when they receive the full amount?

I emailed so that I could have a printout with the Walgreens logo/email on it. I can’t count how many times I’ve had the … “One coupon per purchase” means one coupon must be tendered for each PIECE sold … conversation! Argh!

My husband is a Manager for Walgreens and I can tell you that you are, in fact, allowed to use manufacturer coupons in combination with Walgreens coupons..They DO NOT have a policy against it. I have absolutely no trouble when using the combination at any Walgreens store.
I wish I never had any trouble doing it. I had trouble 2 hours ago at my Walgreens when the computer beeped and wouldn;t take the Walgreens John Freida printable Q along with the MQ. The cashier gave me one of the q’s back and told me I couldn’t use both….I asked her to call the manager over and just to get me out the door (a line was forming) she pushed it through and I was able to use both. She said the Wags Q didn’t say “MQ” but she noticed that her register was reading MQ. She didn’t understand that. My Wags coupon experience is totally different every time I’m in there. I don’t even bother with half the deals because I always get a hard time!
If I tried to use a coupon that was more than the amount of the item as soon as the register beeped I would get it handed back and told I couldn’t use it. They have the worst customer service. I try to avoid WAG and use CVS. I’ve never had issue with overage at CVS.
Walgreens Register Rewards print out saying manufacturer coupon on them. I have successfully taken them to Wal-mart and used them there. The cashiers have called a manager to double check if it is ok, but since they are legitimate manufacturers coupons you can use them. (Of course you are very likely to be hassled since their is a Walgreens logo on them.) However, recently Walgreens has put out special Walgreens only Register Rewards that specifically state only valid at Walgreens.
I am glad that you were able to use them at Wal-Mart where you live. I had a manufacture coupon from Wags and they wouldn’t take it.
I will only shop at one Walgreens, its the one in my small town. They go out of their way to make coupons work for me. They will even help me find coupons, and let me know if I should wait on a sale…Of course it doesn’t hurt that they are rated in the top 10% for customer service in the country…Across the river, there are 2 larger stores, but they will only let you use one coupon per item, that is only a WALGREENS OR A MANUFACTURE NOT BOTH. You can only use the Walgreens cash off (the ones not marked one per transaction) one per transaction. From what I can find out from my stores management, it up to the manager on how they take coupons.
I like our manager, if it rings up take it. (Better than losing the sale, and making the customer mad). Hope that helps some.
Thoughts and comments from a Walgreens manager:
Some coupons, even if distributed by Walgreens are counted as manufacturer coupons due to agreements with a third party like Proctor and Gamble to use it as such.
Try to checkout in cosmetics because you won’t hold up the line and if something goes wrong you will have been luck with the employees figuring it out.
As far as adjusting prices to cover the coupons, any manager should fix the price to “make it work”, but don’t be surprised if they haven’t done it, or are reluctant to do so. It hardly ever happens. As far as it being fraudulent I’m sure most of you use coupons on items that are on sale, so the reason the coupon doesn’t scan is because Walgreens already reduced the price. By increase the price back to a point that we don’t give away money, we are basically taking the item off sale. That is a little convoluted but hopefully that made sense.

Great post — I’ve had many issues with my local Walgreens, wrote to the main company, and received a call from the local manager, which still didn’t resolve the issue. You are correct that they have no unified policy. My Walgreens will not accept coupons that are more than the purchase price: example: trying to use $1.00 coupon on 99 cent item. They do not adjust the price; the manager just says no.
Also, if they are out of register reward sale items, they have no policy in place to offer rainchecks as the register reward program is “so new” according to the managers. In my case, they have told me to come back another day during the same sale week so they can call another store to have the item brought from that store to the current store. For a large company, they still seem to run things like a one-store company. Unless the sales are very good at Walgreens, I’ve been trying to avoid shopping there for these reasons. Lots of time wasted and absolutely frustrating.
Thank you for the informative comments. I have several Walgreens stores in my area. Some are great (friendly, helpful) and one is especially bad. The clerks there treat me like a criminal and I really dread going in there, but it is the closest Walgreens to my home. My husband went with me last week for the first time and he agreed! The lady behind the counter was so unkind!
How can I communicate my dissatisfaction with the attitude of the clerks at this store?

I would definitely email and call Walgreens’ corporate customer service to express your dissatisfaction. The more people they hear from, the more likely they are to unify and change the policy to something more favorable.
I have seen some conflicting information to what you posted, also supposedly from corporate, regarding how many Walgreens coupons you can use, so I called corporate this morning. (I also have sent e-mails, but haven’t received a response yet)
I was told by Jessica, that you can use 2 Walgreens coupons and a manufacturer coupon as long as they do not have the same code. I asked specifically if you could use an in-ad coupon, a coupon from Diabetes and you booklet and manufacturer and was told yes.
Then I asked if you could use a coupon from Healthy Savings Booklet, Coupon from December Coupon booklet and Manufacturer coupon for same item and was once again told yes.
So based on my discussion today with corporate, it definitely appears you can use 2 Walgreens coupons. This means that SugarFree Theraflu would be a big money maker using the deal posted here:

I live in a small town in colorado and our walgreens will not let you use more than one register reward per transaction no matter how many items you buy. I have quit shopping there because it is so frusterating. I only go in there when I use thier in ad coupons.
It just goes to show all of us if we are going to be Walgreen’s shopper’s THEY CAN CHANGE THE RULES ANY WAY AND TIME THEY WANT TO!!!!If it says at the end of every policy ” the manager may accept or not accept any coupon” Then that means they will do what ever the heck they feel like doing! I wish I didn’t want thier flippin deals so flippin bad!!lol
I went to my local W-Gs last night and tried to purchase the John Frieda item, which had a W-Gs coupon which you published, along with a manuf. coupon. The register beeped and the manager was asked to come over and she told me specifically that W-Gs does not allow 2 coupons to be used for one product. I also tried to use the Kleenex coupon which had a Walmart logo on it and she said that even though these do not beep, W-Gs will not allow use of any coupons which have a Walmart logo. Bottom line, it depends on the attitude of the manager (and some are downright nasty!) which you get and NOT the official policy of W-Gs!
How do i get the john frieda manuf. coupon?

I just want to correct you on Walgreens not having a coupon policy, if you got to their site (www.walgreens.com) and search coupon policy a page comes up. I believe this to be valuable information and can help prevent any “bad experiences” at the register.
