As a person of a frugal, one of the first things I did to save money was to invest on a lot of towel rags for use in the kitchen. However, I must admit that my home is not 100% free of paper towels. As a person of a somewhat green mind, one thing I have done to “green” my use of paper towels is to use paper towels made from recycled paper not trees.
Marcal Small Steps products are made from the recycled paper collected in residential neighborhoods, office buildings, etc. Marcal Small Steps takes something that may otherwise end up in landfill and turn it into something needed and useful to many.

The first time I tried Marcal Small Steps Products was back in late summer when I got them for free during a Kmart double Coupon event. And well, it’s very easy to get them free since Marcal Small Steps often puts out coupons that make the single rolls free at many stores. You too can get the single rolls for free by using the coupon that was in the Sunday newspaper from January 3rd, 2010. If you did not get these coupons then maybe last week you printed the coupon for $1.25 off one pack of napkins that was available on Smartsource. That should make the packs less than a dollar with a sale. The coupon is not available now but hopefully they will release more coupons again soon. We always recycle. Turning off lights and making sure to turn off the water while brushing our teeth. Bringing milk to work in a coffee cup with a lid and not buying the little cartons.

We recycle everything we possibly can. We don’t have curbside pick up of our recyclables, so we have to take them about 6 miles away to recycle…but we are dedicated. And we buy CFLs only…especially with all the great deals on them lately.
We save cans to recycle.
For Christmas I bought my boys refillable water bottles. They take these to school now instead of bottled water. I also reuse gift bags.
I have recycling. Also a tip i heard on tv about dryer sheets. You can save them and the next time you smear your clothes of deororant(i hate that!!) you can use the used drier sheets to take it of. I just started doing this.
I made cloth napkins and placemats to cut down on paper napkin usage. I recycled Christmas cards into gift tags for next year. I’d love to try these products.
we recycle everything we can + i always use re-useable bags when i shop! if i forget my reuseable bags i make myself (+ 9 year old daughter, if she’s with me) carry everything out without a bag!!! i haven’t been willing to give up paper towels, tissues or paper napkins ~ though i’d love to try a greener version of all the above!!!

We recycle EVERYTHING! This kids know the drill now. Even if it’s a tiny piece of paper, they know to put in the recycling bin.
I jogged with a girl friend that on garbage day would go through and sort people’s garbage to their recycle bin. I have since learned alot thru her. I now am taking shorter showers, have taught my 4 children to recycle in our blue bin and bring my own bag to the grocery store. Little by little, WE can do it!!
We’ve become huge recyclers and also try to unplug electronics when not in use.
I save my junk mail and use the reply envelopes for grocery lists and then once I’m done shopping I recycle the envelope.

I don’t use paper towels.
I use reusable bags for our grocery shopping, and use washcloths instead of paper towels whenever possible. We always unplug appliances and lower the heat when we’re not around, in addition to recycling. It’s great that being green is a conscious thought now!
I use (almost exclusively) cloth bags at the grocery store, Wags, etc. I have also cut back on napkins and other paper products used in our house.
my small steps that i take are purchasing green totes from cvs and other places that I shop and using those instead of plastic bags. Or i encourage cashiers to put more items in fewer bags while bagging up groceries.
This year I made a conscience effort to use re-useable bags at the grocery store and we recycled more in 2009 than any other year. The re-useable bags was easier than I thought, especially when I started getting pretty ones.
We recycle everything and have cut our garbage in half.
I have quit using paper towels for my cleaning. I use washcloths that I throw in the washer.
I have quit using commercial cleaning products and found natural recipes that work pretty well. I use vinegar to clean the windows combine 2 cups of water, 1/4 cup of white distilled vinegar, and up to 1/2 teaspoon of liquid soap or detergent in a spray bottle. I also use reusable grocery bags or old plastic bags I have laying around the house.
Stopped buying 24 pack of water in bottles. Purchased one good water bottle at Target and keep refilling it.
I’m trying to use reusable bags at the grocery store etc. That can add up to a lot of bags! Also I figure at $.05 a bag using 5 bags a week can save $50.00 in a year! My husband thinks I’m crazy.

I have done soooo much,I use all reusable bags when shopping(keep in car so I don’t forget), have been recycling for years, turn off electronics at the powercord when not in use, use less paper towels(old wash clothes for all cleaning) compost, all paper down to envelopes and fold cereal boxes to recycle. I have always wanted to try Marcal and always see the coupons for a free roll–but I’ve searched their website for a store within 120 miles (which would include both Louisville and Cincinnati) and they say there are none. Where do you typically find single rolls?

I have to say I’ve always tried to be green since I was somewhere in my teens. My parents always recycled and when my hubby and I purchased our 1st home-I called up the city and asked for recycling bins. I even recycle for family members that do not have pick up recycling offered in their area. I have also been faithfully using the grocery store cloth bags for some time now.

This year I have tried to unplug electronics that are not in use. I already use reusable bags.
We recycle as much as we can reuse as much as we can. I use old jars and containers for food storage and other storage around the house. I also have been more diligent about taking my reusable bags to the grocery store.

Before anything gets thrown away, we look to see if there is any value to it…we donate items, we share them with neighbors, we think of creative new uses. a big one has been using reusable bags…they are always in the car ready for the store. even when i forget to bring them in, i ask the cashier not to bag my items, and i place them in the bags when i get to the car.

Using cloth bags while grocery shopping, shorter showers, fewer paper towels, hanging clothes out to dry in the summer.
I don’t use paper towels. I use a wash cloth to wipe down my counters and tables.
We use reusable bags for our grocery shopping, use cloth diapers with our new baby, and shop as much as possible at the local farmers market.
We have begun composting rather than throwing away kitchen scraps. Now we are helping our environment and my garden.
We have tried to reduce the amout of paper towels we use, and use rags and hand towels instead. We also started taking stuff to the recycling bin as we don’t have a recycling program that will come pick our stuff up.

We moved to a new City which doesn’t offer recycling for apartment complexes. My husband and I have been collecting our recyclables in large tubs and going every few months when we can to drop them off at centers or recycling events hosted by the City. We also use exclusively reusable bags, I have a small one that fits in my purse for times when I’m out and have forgotten all of them. Also, if it’s a single item and they start to bag it I will just tell them I don’t need one and carry stuff out to the car. We had one car only until November but I generally carpool or bus to and from work. When we have kids we are going to use cloth diapers. I am committed to doing the little things because together they can make a big difference. Next I’m going to transition to “greener” cleaners – vinegar is great I’ve heard.

Last year I stopped using my clothes dryer. I hang all wash outside or on a line in my basement. I also stopped buying most paper products except for toilet paper! I make my own greeting cards and wrap all presents by recycling junk mail and packaging material that I receive.

We recycle, we shut the lights off when not in use and replaced bulbs to CFLs, don’t use the dryer in the summer, we also have our own garden and can our own veges and fruits.
Like you, I use cloth rags, but I still keep paper towels around. Keeping them less accessible really cuts down on my use. I took down my paper towel holder, and now I keep them under the sink, on the shelf, so I’m more likely to grab a dishtowel or a rag for a spill now, as I make sure they are handier.
I have been trying to go a little “greener” by using the recyclable bags, and watching our water and energy usage around the house. I am going to eventually set up a system to start separating out plastics, etc.
I actually use some of the Small Steps products already, we have all CFL bulbs in our home , recycle, turn down the heat when we aren’t home, also have our own garden, always use reusable bags to shop and are trying to (slowly, but trying) to switch over our applicances to better energy star rated applicances.
I hung a clothes line in my back yard this summer and hung almost all my clothes on it.

we have been focusing on using home made cleaning products (vinegar, water, baking soda) instead of buying prepared cleaners.
I don’t ever buy trash bags, and instead use the plastic bags I get when grocery shopping
We have started (oh a year ago now I guess) recycling paper, plastics, cardboard, etc. We live in the country, but there is a recycle container in town. So we save it and haul it in once a week or so. I figure we save at least between 1/2 and 1 garbage can every two weeks, and usually more. It’s amazing how the stuff piles up.

I made a challenge to my family to go green at Christmas. I made reusable gift sacks from fabric. They were really nice. My daughter has a black and red living room, so I made black sacks with black and white polka dot top bands. I closed the top with a rubber band, which made a flower out of the polka dot material and then tied my cute sacks with a reusable ribbon. The sacks took about a day to make. The grand kids return them to Grammi for more loot.

I use reusable bags about 90% of the time when I shop, I made my own “swiffer duster”, I make my own homemade cleaners and we try to recycle a lot more than we ever have.

I too am trying to cut back on the paper towels. I try using hand towels more in the kitchen. Not only does this make things greener, but paper towels get to be expensive.
I recycle everything our recycling center accepts. I even take my coworkers recyclable home with me to drop off at the recycling center. I use reusable bags at the grocery store. I unplug appliances when I am not using them. I use brita filters and bpa free, stainless steel water bottles instead of bottled water. I also use “Blackle” instead of Google.
I requested an extra recycle bin (and received it!) from the city. We are conscious to fill them up!

I have been bringing my reusable bags to stores, we recycle far more than we throw away and I try to keep our furnace set at no more than 65 in the winter.

My mother in law has taught me how much I can truly toss in the recycling bin, so I’m being more ruthless with the things I recycle this year.
I reuse foaming soap containers for dish soap and hand soap. When they get empty I just fill them back up with water mixed in with 2 tablespoons of soap and it’s worked just fine!

In our family we try to be green as much as we can – recycling, carpooling, reusing… Reusable bags are great, but sometimes if I get plastic – if I don’t have enough reusable, well… it happens to me sametimes – I use it as trashbag in small bins,like in the bathrooms.

The most recent thing I have done to become greener is to put recycle cans all over our house, so I don’t have an excuse to throw something away that is recyclable. We have cans in the kitchen, office, master bathroom. I keep them right next to the trash can, so it is just as easy to recycle as to throw away. I have also FINALLY gotten my husband to start recycling consistently. Woo hoo!

The small steps I have taken to lead a greener life are as follows:
I found a route to work each day that is a lot of downhill (and very little traffic) to preserve gas/emissions.
I plant a vegetable garden every spring – this food is VERY local!
I have become a vegan to cut back on overall meat consumption.
I use reusable grocery bags.
I recycle my newspapers every week.
I use an aluminum water bottle.
I buy the majority of our clothes at a secondhand store (instead of new)
I put an egg timer in my bathroom to cut down on shower time.

I have taken many steps to a “greener” life. Here are a few examples: plant a garden and can all my extra produce, use old towels/washcloths for cleaning rags, buy most clothing from tag sales/thrift stores or consignment, handmade gifts, make my own green cleaners, use the solar dryer most of the time.
We always recycle. I am trying to get the other household members to shut off lights when they are done in the room.

We recycle everything we can, and always take bags to the grocery store. Now I’m working on getting my DH to also take bags when he goes.
I learned frugality from my parents and grandparents, who came of age in the Great Depression and World War II eras.
We turn all of our cardboard cereal/cracker boxes inside out and let our toddlers use them to finger paint on before we recycle them!
I hid my paper towels, and try to use only cloth for cleaning, etc.
My big project is to end the use of paper towels – such a waste – and cloth is so much better.
We make sure to turn lights and appliances off when not in use, and we recycle what we can.
the latest green effort has been collecting all the water that was run while waiting on the hot water to make it to the tap. I haven’t started my laundry day without a washer full of water in several months.
We just bought some great stainless steel water bottles to use instead of plastic. They are awesome.
Here at my house we recycle every week (curbside) and return bottles and cans to the grocery store. We use green bags for groceries. I also make sure the heat is turned down when I leave for work.
I use green bags for everything. I keep them in my trunk and take them in the store all the time to get rid of those plastic bags!
Our family recycles our plastic, newspapers, cardboard, and several other items at a local school. The school gets the proceeds from the collected items.
At work I have placed several boxes around the office for every one to recycle paper instead of throwing it in the trash. Every couple of months I call this person I met through freecycle and she picks it up for her daughter that is a school teacher. The kids in the class use this paper for coloring, projects, drawings etc and when they are done with it they recycle it also.
I have some reusable shopping bags that I TRY to remember to take in with me to the grocery store. I also put in a vegetable garden this year.

I’ve been recycling and composting – even started composting with worms to eat all our food and paper trash. Then it goes on the garden. Great fruit this year!

I try to avoid using plastic and we recycle everything we can.
I use fabric bags for shopping and recycle tons. I actually ordered an additional recycle bin from the town I live in as one was not enough:) I’d love to try out the Marcal paper products. I have not seen them at the stores I shop at.
Instead of buying bottled water, I bought a water pitcher with a filter.
I recycle of course! I also use old papers and junk mail that I get and print my coupons on the back! I also use fabric bags for all my shopping needs!

I started a recycling center at my school where I teach.
We have only fluorescent bulbs, we use reusable bags for groceries, etc and we are an essentially paper-free home (although I’d love to win this giveaway!).
I would love to win this. We use cfls, no paper towels, reecycled toilet paper, biodegradable trash bags, and cloth diapers when possible.

I reuse everything before I recycle it: printer paper, Ziploc bags, you name it, if it’s reusable then it’s saved! I can’t tell you how much money I’ve saved just by printing coupons on the back side of scrap paper and other things.

I use the back of old papers from my kid’s homework to print coupons on the back of them. I sell my old books and magzines to a book store to get a trade in for more books to read.

I use my reusable bags pretty regularly, unless I need paper/plastic bags to re-use (e.g., that’s how I pack my donations). I also try to use reusable plastic containers instead of zip top bags, since I don’t wash those.

we’ve been doing a lot of little things for a long time. years ago I switched to buying only energy efficient light bulbs. When they were still very expensive. I love my reusable shopping bags and the stores are great for giving you 5 cents to use them. I’m always telling the kids to turn off the water while they brush their teeth. Maybe somedays they will actually think about it without me reminding them. I take all our old clothes to friends or goodwill because even the oldest most discusting things get reused as rags in factory that I work. I try not to use plastic bottles of water and sodas but on the rare occation that I do I am sure to use it at least 3 times before I recycle it. Then recycling all the aluminum, paper, glass, plastic and metals whenever possible. We have been recycling more than we throw away for a long time. even with (at one point 3 children in disposable diapers). I’m just not committed enough or financially able to go to a diaper service at this point in my life and i am NOT going to do that at home. I’d rather be home with the kids than working for diapers. Sorry for the diapers in the landfills. but I digress. we’ve been trying for many years and these reused towels are a great Idea. This week our drier died and I’m looking around for an energy efficient one. All these little things make such a big difference in the long run.
I’ve really started making a huge effort to recycle. I find myself shouting “NO!” Whenever I see someone starting to throw a can in the garbage. We’ve sort of made it into a game at my house! I also joined recycle bank & will be looking for more ways to “go green” in this new year!
going green by the 3-R principle: reduce, reuse & recycle.
We are buying less, and when we do buy, we try to get it used first to minimize waste. We also are trying to buy food from the bulk section to reduce all of the packaging waste!
I always try to make my own reusable bags to the grocery store so I don’t have to use their plastic bags!
we use the reusable shopping bags all the time as well as trying to limit how often we use paper products in our kitchen. We are not paperless but we are trying.

I do the norms like recycle, use my reuseable bags. I keep the thermostat waaaay down to 62-65, got my lite bulbs.
What I am most proud of, I have made my own napkins we use instead of paper and I now making my own ziploc storage bags. Frugal and enviromental!
We recycle, dry clothes on the clothesline and use CFLs.

Use plastic on windows and floor guard on door to save on heating. Pull plugs on items not in use to save on electric.

I have really opened my eyes about going green. no plastic for me. less shower time. more candles, less electricity. more reuseable towels. lot more.
This year I started using resusable bags when I shop.
The only time I get a paper bag is when school start and we need to cover books or to recycle the newspaper. Plastic bags the only good thing is to get the kids feet out of the boots. Otherwise i carry my own bags.
I am pretty good about using reusable shopping bags, we keep our thermostat set on 65 degrees in the winter and 80 degrees in the summer, we recycle aluminum and paper, we are careful to minimize our electricity usage, we combine trips to minimize gasoline usage.
I hang my laundry instead of using the dryer
I have been reusing the plastic bags from the supermarkets and I also purchased some reusable bags
