Online Survey Company Review: MyPoints

MyPoints Online Survey Company review comes to you courtesy of reader, and friend, Marcia S.  Marcia has been using MyPoints for a while and here she shares her experience with it.

I have been using MyPoints for years. I started shortly after I had my first child and found myself as a stay at home Mom.  I find it to be a very easy way to earn points for great gift cards.

Ways to earn points:

  • They will send you emails, read the email and follow the link and get 5 points just for reading!
  • Decide to buy what the emails are selling get more points some are a flat 1,000 points others are 2-5 points per dollar you spend
  • Go to my points home page and start your online shopping there get 2-5 points per dollar and still use all of your other promo codes ( I order my eBay coupons by starting at MyPoints I get 2 points per dollar I spend)
  • Fill out surveys they send you. That will usually get you 50-100 points for less then 5 minutes of your time.
  • Do searches through MyPoints and get 75 points for searching 31 or more times in a month!
  • My favorite way: Referring friends will get you about 250 points.

What do you use your points on? Well, there are at least 100 different businesses you can trade your points in for gift cards. Everything from Chili’s restaurant to Burger King, Walgreens to CVS, Old Navy to Target, and everything in-between! I like to use my points on gift cards of the store that I shop online at. Then when I am spending my gift card I can also start earning points again. They are wonderful around the holidays. With the gift cards I earn it cuts down on my out of pocket for gift giving!

It is free to sign up for MyPoints and your points never expire. You don’t ever have to buy anything from any of the emails. You could get points only from reading the emails and still be able to cash out for gift cards.

I hope this helps answer some of the questions you may have about MyPoints. You are not going to get rich from joining MyPoints but you will get something! I cash in my points once a year and usually average about $125-$150 in gift cards my best year was last year when I cashed in for $250 in gift cards!!! (I singed up for AT&T U-verse and received 4,000 points!!!!)

Thank you so much Marcia for sharing your experience with my readers.  If you have been using MyPoints for a while as well, please share your experience in the comments and help the rest of the readers who have not given MyPoints a try decide whether it is for them or not.

  1. I’ve been using MyPoints for over a decade; I just redeemed some points for a $25 J.Jill gift card. I’ve gotten quite a few gift cards through the years, most often just for clicking their links. 5 points a click adds up more quickly than you’d think!

Mypoints was a great site untill a few years ago.Now they are fast becoming almost a scam site.As long as you don’t have enough points to redeem more than a $10 or $25 gift card they are ok.(The cards do take mths to come now).

As soon as you get enought points for a $50 card or above they will freeze your account with no customer service email or phone you can access as you have to log in to get in contact with them.Google mypoints and you will see how many people have had problems with them including myself.I had almost $200 worth in gift cards and when I redeemed them they froze my account with no recourse.:(

Well, I can’t respond to the above posters issue as I only ever redeeem for the $10 gift cards. Last time I got one was in December. It worked great and came in about 2 weeks. There is another way to earn the original poster forgot to mention – Coupons! You print your coupons (as best I can tell these are the same as available on coupons.com) and when you redeem them you get 10 points per coupon. I just did this for the first time a couple of days ago so have been watching my account to see what happens. I also just ordered another gift card last week, so I will update when it comes to let you know how long it takes. Overall, I’ve been really happy with them :)

I love My Points. I really only do the emails and surveys but last year I redeemed for 2 $25 gift cards and 3 $10 giftcards all in time for Christmas! I sent for them all at the same time and I had no problems and received them all in about 2 weeks! I am a big fan and have nothing bad to say about them!

MyPoints works great for me. I click on the 5pt emails, print and redeem coupons for groceries and purchase my Lancome cosmetics thru the site. I have received several $25 and $50 gift cards for Walgreens with no problems at all. I order them using my points and they come faithfully in less than 2 weeks.

I used Mypoints for about 10 years and referred several friends and family members. I felt quite comfortable and was happy with Mypoints and allowed points to accrue for about 2 yrs. Well turns out that was a mistake. When I redeemed the points for a gift card the order and my account were cancelled with a very heavy handed email from Mypoints trying to intimidate me. Their customer service never would provide an explaination as to why my account was cancelled – but continued to send a preprinted reply stating I had violated there terms of service. After two request for a specific reason of how I hand violated the terms of service Mypoints customer service would not respond to me. In the mean time 2 of my referrals had their accounts cancelled in the exact same fashion and they likewise had large point balances. I was so dismayed that I was treated like a pariah I ended up contacting the Ceo of Mypoints about this. They quickly reinstated my account and order indicating error but never provided any specific info. My referrals did not contact CEO and did not have their accounts reopenned. I spent the points in my account and cancelled my account. In the process of being treated like this I looked around online and found this was not an uncommon occurrence. Word to the wise if you are using Mypoints you should be cautious about letting your accounts accrue points beyond $25.

I have been using Mypoints for a long time now but recently I ordered a $50 Express gift card which I have done in the past. It took the usualt time to arrive but when I tried to use it I was told there is a zero balance on it! Even calling the # on the back confirmed it. I was shocked to realize that Mypoints has no customer service # so I sent an exlanitory email describing my frustration and all I got back was a canned response about calling the # on the back of the card then sending it back to Mypoints for an investigastion, which could take months! I responded that it was not an acceptable solution and request a manager’s contact info. I just got the response which was that there is no such contact info available and I could only respond to the email or send an additional email! This is very frustrating because I recently ordered a Mypoints gift card as a gift and now I can’t be sure it will be active. After reading this I’m sure they’ll be cancelling my account soon for violationg terms of agreement. After all the business I’ve brought them over the years it’s such a shame!

  7. SA says:

Sheri can you let us know how you contacted the Mypoints CEO? That’s exactly what I was talking abouth. They turn into a bunch of crooks as soon as your point balance goes beyond a certain limit.

  8. Stephanie says:

I’ve been using MyPoints for 1 1/2 yrs and usually cash out for $10 gift cards toward clothes for the kidlets or as a treat to myself for lunch with friends. The 5 pts do add up faster than you think! Also, if I know I’m going to be buying anything on ebay I always make sure I’ve ‘clicked’ on MyPoints so that it catches the purchase and those dollars hit my account. It’s a nice bonus.

Thanks to those who have not had good experiences for posting. I’m gonna head over and check my balance:)

I also had problems with Mypoints. I was a member for for a couple years, referred a few family members and friends and then my account was closed with only a generic email saying I had “violated” terms. Then several of my referred people were also terminated. We did NOTHING to voilate the terms. All I can think is I earned several $10 cards in the same year (mostly from buying things from vendors through mypoints) and they must have a undisclosed limit of what you can earn in a specified time and then they just terminate you. It wasn’t even that much – maybe $50 in six months but they gave no reason. And worse my referrals were terminated right as they were about ready to earn their first $10 cards. Multiple emails to them received only generic “voilated the terms” emails which was completely bogus.

Then, oddly enough several months later one of my friends’ account was re-activated. She just started received the emails again. Of course her prior balance was completely missing.

As a CPA, I strongly suspect fraud from the company based on the way they cheat legitimate account holders out of earnings. Perhaps when they hit a monthly budget crunch they do this? The company really needs to have an investigation by some states attorney generals or the better business bureau or something. Since it’s all small dollars (that probably add up from all of us cheated), they can get by with it. Hopefully their bad business ethics catch up with them sooner than later.

I have used MyPoints since 1997. I mostly just do the click through e-mails. I will print coupons from there on the few occasions I use printables, and will shop through their site if another site can’t beat their %cashback. For me the surveys don’t pay as much as survey site, so I don’t take their surveys. I usually redeem about $35 each year. I save my e-mails for a week and do them all at once. The rate of pay is about $8/hour. I haven’t had problems with customer service, but then again I don’t let my account get to large, just for the fear of getting cancelled. Almost any site like this or a survey site all say in their terms of service that it can cancel you or shut the site down without cause. I prefer to cash out as soon as I can so that I don’t take that risk. Actually my first gift card back in 97 was about 2 months in coming (usually only about 3 weeks) I called about it, and they sent me another one. Both cards came within a week of one another and when I called about it, they said keep them both for the trouble! I guess it’s sort of like diapers- one brand works for some and not for others!

I’ve been using My Points for less than a year. I only do the emails and a few surveys, so I’ve only gotten enough points so far for one $10 gift card and I’m halfway to another $10 gift card. I can’t get points for the coupons because when I try they show up as Smart Souce coupons and I can’t print from Smart Source. Other than that I’ve had no problems with My Points.

  14. I have been a member since 2007 and have redeemed over 46,000 points for over $300 in gift cards. I almost always redeem for a $10 or $25 Pizza Hut gift card to fund our family’s favorite pizza splurge! It isn’t a way to get rich, but you can certainly earn enough points for some nice gift cards. I’ve never had a problem with them taking more than a month to arrive, usually about 2 weeks like others said. And I cash them in pretty regularly (every other month or once every 3 months), so no problems like others mentioned with high point balances.

Another fast way to earn points is by booking flights through there–click thru MyPoints, then to Travelocity and make your purchase. I also do ebay purchases through MyPoints.

The referral process isn’t as lucrative as it used to be with “the Network”. You used to earn a flat number of points when a friend joined, but now you earn 10% of their points instead. My network isn’t big, but some months it shows a negative balance for some of the members–tell me how someone earns -5 points in a month? I don’t get it.

Overall, though, I do recommend MyPoints, and if someone wants to join my network, email me! :-)

I have been using mypoints for 12 years (joined Sept. 1998) and I have averaged about $100 in gift cards every year (about $25 a quarter). If you click through their links for shopping then you will earn considerably more (I often forget to use their links and I still earn $100 a year just clicking on the emails they send me). I usually spend my points on amazon gift cards.

  16. starbucksgirl says:

I haven’t had any problems with redeeming gift cards but I usually redeem my points as soon as I have enough for a reward. I don’t let them accumulate in my account.

  17. Jeff says:

Shopping through MyPoints doesn’t appear like it would give the best return. I use Evreward.com to show me which cash-back sites give the best return.

  18. Gina says:

My husband and I are both members. I never qualify for their surveys so I don’t even waste my time. I do their click-through emails and print all my coupons.com and Smart Source emails through mypoints. I usually earn enough for around $100 in gift cards/year (I redeem for the $25 – as does my DH). I usually redeem for either Amazon gift certificates or Barnes & Noble gift cards. My DH redeems for Home Depot cards. We’ve been members since 2004 – I’ve used our gift cards to purchase Christmas gifts. DH has used his gift cards to purchase various things for “fixing up” the house.

  19. jan says:

I only joined recently, but did all of my Christmas shopping through mypoints and earned enough for a $100 dollar gift card in about 2 months. I haven’t had any problems so far. They are having a referral bonus right now–you can get 750 points for being referred and making one purchase over $20 at any store. When you add in the points for actually setting up your account, you’ll be getting close to enough for a $10 card with not much effort. It’s only individual referrals, so email me at pchemo@aol.com if you are interested.

  20. Joy says:

How many points does it take to get a $10 cert or a $25 cert? how many points seem to be “too many” where they cancel you without warning?

    thanks so much!!

  21. CathyG says:

My Opinions is good but it takes alot of time to build up enough points to redeem for me anyway . I have started many surveys and spend time getting in and starting but have only qualified for 2 as I get screened out all the time. I have been a member of almost 1 yr and have got about 900 points and have spent hours doing these surveys so its cheap way to do Market Research. I dont know how people earn so much every month.
