So let me know what you think of this situation. My walgreens had a clearance end cap with bottles of Fantastik priced at 89 cents each. I got one and was going to use a $1/1 coupon on it to get it free. The lady at the cash register said that she could not take a dollar off something that was less than a dollar. I asked if she could take off 89 cents and she said no. I told her that I did not want the Fantastic anymore so please take it off.

Since when are we not allowed to do that at Walgreens? Everyone I know does it all the time…

The degree coupon must of been regional, I didn’t get it in MN, got Suave instead. Darn.

I had the same situation. I purchased something for 99 cents on sale at Walgreens and had a $1 off coupon. The cashier called the manager. I asked if I could have the item price overridden to be $1 and then my coupon taken off. The manager said no, so I had the sale cancelled since that was the only item I was purchasing. The manager rolled his eyes at me and threw the item in the go back pile. This has happened a few times to me at Walgreens.

  • hi Anna,
Unfortunately your problem is much to common at Walgreens. I have never had a problem getting a coupon adjusted down at CVS but the entire opposite has been the case at Walgreens. I get the impression that cashiers AND managers are told this is not OK to do, hence their refusal to do it.
Having said that I am going to explain to you how the Walgreens register works and how you can use this knowledge to your advantage:

The walgreens register adds up the value of your items and it is against this total that applies the coupons you use in your order.
So for example if you were buying 5 of these fantastik at $0.89 each. Your total is $4.45. To avoid any beeping problems use only 4 $1/1 coupons instead of five. Sure, you have to pay 45 cents for your five bottles but the 45 cents you pay are worth the grief you are avoiding. You still have to use one coupon per item though if you try to use more manufacturer coupons than you have items the register will beep “item not found.”

I will be writing a post about this this week to help people avoid problems at Walgreens.

It seems kind of weird to me that sometimes Walgreens would encourage coupon overage and then not allow it other times. Like a couple weeks ago during that sale of free Garnier stuff. The Garneir stuff was priced at 2.99, and you could use coupons to get $3 off, and Walgreens was ok with this. It sounds like there are tricks to overcoming this, so I am definitely going to read up on Mercedes’ post later this week.

I have had this happen to me a number of times at WG. However, it seems to be a cashier thing. The computer doesn’t recognize a $1 off coupon as a problem for a .99 cent item as long as you get something else to cover the overage. The cashier is stopping the coupon even going through by NOT SCANNING it. I got so upset at a cashier that told me the register would “beep” at her and not allow her to do this type of transaction. I asked her to just scan the coupon and see what would happen but she refused. She wouldn’t even try. The manager was a likewise jerk and acted as if I were trying to steal from them. I told her I had never had this problem before and I just came back later when another person was at the register.

If they would look at the big picture. They are able to claim sales in that quarter, they get the full value of a manuf coupon dback plus a handling fee, PLUS they get my business for things that I may buy there without a coupon to make it free to me. This whole thing just seems to be getting worse and it varies by region, store, manager and even the cashier.

The degree q is actually in the 1/18 RP I believe (and there is a .75/1 IP) but it’s only a $1/2 in my insert.. not sure that’s a good enough deal for me given I have a lot of deos! 🙂

BE AWARE when trying to earn register rewards! Wanted to post regarding Walgreens and something else to watch out for. Be sure to check and make sure you get your REGISTER REWARDS when you qualify for them. During this past week’s special for the Frito Lays buy $20 worth of soda/snacks,get $10 RR in return, the rewards did not print after my purchase. The cashier acted bewildered when I asked for the rewards and she acted like she didn’t know the specail that was going on. This happened BOTH times that I purchased these items and from 2 different stores. Everything I purchased had to be returned and sold out again by a manager. The second time this happened (at a different location) and I had to see the manager to fix the problem, I asked if this was a common problem since this was not the first time this happened. His explanation was that as soon as you enter a manufacturers coupon(whether it is for the product the register rewards is for or not) it will not print your rewards! It is a glitch that they are aware of but it has been like that since they started the rewards program. Hopefully they fix the glitch soon, but in the meantime, be aware and make sure you get the rewards!!!

Not sure if it helps, but there is a $3/5 manufaturer coupon for Quaker products that you can use towards the $1.99 sale price of Cap’n Crunch & Life. Not spectacular, I know, but is getting 1.5 boxes for free.

I am trying to eat healthier and lose some weight so my doctor recommended Alli. The starter pack is on sale for $49.99 plus a $10 register rewards. Also, if you sign up on their website you can print out a $10 manufacturer coupon. So I got the starter pack for $29! Thanks Mercedes for all your hard work I love your website!!

Wow! I just thought I’d see if I read the Hershey candy bar deal right and I see all these Walgreens complaints. Well, I have another one. I bought Hershey’s candy bars and the cashier took the Walgreens BOGO coupon and then said I couldn’t use my Manufacturers BOGO coupon. (I think the register beeped, but not sure). The manager said I couldn’t use both coupns because I that would make the items FREE. And I did have other items to buy with it. The cashier also said they have new coupon policies. Anyone else run into this problem?

  • I love your blog and have linked to yours from mine. Thanks!
