Trumped Money Saving Trip

I have mentioned before that only one grocery store around me doubles coupons. They would double only once a month, up to five coupons (up to $1) and you had to spend $25 before coupons in order to be able to double.

This past Wednesday was double coupon day. I had my game plan and was all set to get almost free paper towels and a few free gallons of milk thanks to a cereal/milk promotion they had going on. Imagine my surprise when that morning I call to verify the double coupon promotion was still going only to find out they are phasing it out! I was flabbergasted to say the least. Since the weather was pretty nasty that day anyway (icy roads and snow) I decided to skip my trip alltogether and stay home.

I am very disappointed with the store’s decision to cancel this program. Sometimes I don’t understand the business decisions some people make. This store has replaced this program that benefitted many people for another program that puts the brunt of the work on the shopper. It’s very inconvenient and almost non-practical. The store is going to lose a lot of loyal shoppers. I certainly wouldn’t consider myself a loyal shopper, I am a deal hunter. But there’s nothing stopping me now from taking their sales flier to Walmart and having it price matched.

I still went to the store the next day and was able to get free milk and cereal. The store had Post cereal buy one get one free. I also had coupons for a free gallon of milk when you buy four Post cereals. So I used the internet printables coupons for Honey Bunches of Oats Chocolate Clusters available here and here together with my free milk coupon to get 8 boxes of cereal and two gallons of milk free. This morning I am taking six of the boxes to the Food Drive my friend is having to benefit a Women’s shelter. So everyone is a winner.

I am also working on putting together an online petition to bring double coupons back. I think it’s at least worth a try.
