3 Reasons Why You Should Freeze Your Fruit to Save Money

frozen-fruitI’ve did a good bit of articles in the past talking about food waste. It’s believed that Americans will end up throwing out as much as 30% of the groceries they buy every single month. This is a huge number that can easily be cut down. I highly suggest looking over some of my past posts I’ve done on food waste for some very helpful tips on how to cut down on food waste. One of the ways you can cut down on the amount of food you waste is by freezing your fruit. That way, it lasts longer. If you do this, you’ll also be able to save some money, as well. Let’s look at the reasons why you should freeze your fruit and save money doing it.

#1. Check the Freezer Before Going to the Grocery Store

It’s important that you check your freezer before you head out on a trip to the grocery store. A lot of times, people completely forget what they have at home and they end up buying more of an item that they already have in their freezer. This is especially true when it comes to things like fruit, meats, etc… Also, you should always check the expiration date on the items you have and see what you have that’s still good and edible. You can save a ton of money by checking out which items you have at home before you even go shopping.

#2. Freeze As Much as You Can

It’s important that you freeze whatever you can if you think that you won’t be able to use an item up before the expiration date. Whatever you freeze, you should put a label on the item, as well as the expiration date. That way, you never have to play a guessing game. Also, you could set a reminder on your phone to remind you when certain things are about to reach their expiration date. Of course, you’ll want to eat up fruits that are nearing their expiration date.

#3. Freeze in Advance

As you probably know, you can typically save a good bit of money by purchasing things in bulk. Therefore, whenever I have the option to buy fruit in bulk to save money, I usually do it. However, you have to remember that you’re only going to be able to save money if you consume what you buy. If not, you’re probably going to throw away food and money.

Whenever I purchase something in bulk, I’ll typically come home and freeze half of whatever I purchased right off the bat. Therefore, if you purchase two packages of blackberries to save money, you should freeze one of the packages as soon as you get home from the grocery store. Of course, you’ll want to eat the fresh fruit and save the frozen fruit for later in the week. That way, you’re able to save as much fruit and money as possible.
