Walmart: Backpacks for Charity Backpack Challenge

How is your back to school shopping coming along?  There are tons of great deals available right now. Walmart challenged me as a Walmart Mom to put together a back to school backpack for as little as I could.

I have a six year old boy who is going into first grade, but I decided to shop for an slightly older boy.  I was lucky that my local Walmart had shopping lists available for the different grades available right by the back to school supply area.

I took this list and shopped around for the items requested and was able to get it all for $30.15.  The bulk of the cost went to the backpack I bought to donate.  I just really wanted to make sure to provide a child with a backpack that will outlast him one school year. But the school supplies were very affordable:

Large Glue Stick 3ct $2.47
Expo markers black 2ct $1.47
Crazy Crayons 24ct $0.14
Dixon pencils 24ct $0.94
Notebooks 20-40¢
Folders 20¢
Fiskars scissors $1.47

One thing I liked about the BTS display at Walmart is that alongside any brand offers, you will also find a slightly less expensive option.  For example, I grabbed the CraZArt crayons for $0.19 because the Crayola ones were $0.40.

I did my shopping last week, but if I had shopped today I would have price matched the Expo Markers that are on sale at Walgreens and used the $2/2 Expo Markers coupon available to get them free.  I can’t do that, but that is something you can do.  If you don’t want to run around chasing back to school deals at other stores, do your shopping at one place and price match at Walmart.

One thing I noticed is that Walmart has a wider selection of backpacks available online than what was available in-store.  Most of them shipped to your home for just 97¢.  My favorite is the one here that has the clip on lunch bag. I think that is a great value for the price.

Disclosure: I am an official Walmart Mom. Walmart has provided me with compensation in return for my time and effort spent creating this post. My participation in this program is voluntary and my opinions are always my own.
