Hand Sanitizer Sold Out? Make Your Own with this Recipe!

With all of the panic and preparation surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak, hand sanitizer is sold out almost everywhere. The World Health Organization has made a recipe available for how to make alcohol-based handrub or sanitizer at home but it is a bit complicated and makes a large quantity.  According to the World Health Organization, this sanitizer will quickly and effectively take care of potentially harmful microorganisms on hands. The Centers for Disease Control and prevention recommends using a hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol. This recipe meets that guideline as long as correct measurement and preparation steps are followed.

Another recipe that meets the same guideline, when using correct measurement and preparation steps, is a bit more simple to make with ingredients from Amazon, Walmart or other retailers. Hand sanitizer does not replace proper hand washing but it can help considerably when hand washing is not an option.

Ingredients:
2/3 cup Isopropyl Alcohol 91% (Rubbing Alcohol)
1/3 cup aloe vera gel
Essential oil (optional)

A small or medium mixing bowl
A spoon
An empty container with a lid or seal
A small piece of tape or label

Directions:
Stir Isopropyl alcohol and aloe vera gel together in mixing bowl until well mixed.
Optional: Add 8-10 drops of scented essential oil. Stir to incorporate.
Pour the homemade hand sanitizer into empty container and seal. Label for safety.
